We are very excited to release our preliminary holiday offerings just in time for Thanksgiving.
We have had an amazing year in chocolate, coffee, tea and spice land. We’ve got bikeCOFFEE! up and running, been at some amazing markets, met lots of fascinating and inspiring people and have been developing our chocolate and coffee lounge for downtown Durham.
On the chocolate front, we’ve been reworking some recipes, creating new ones and dabbling in our melange of taste, pleasure, health and history!
We have some new choices this year and some recipe changes such as:
Truffles:
Santa Sangre – homemade hibiscus sauce with allspice rich chocolate ganache.
Bombay Bombshell – creamy chai and curry ganache topped with a bit of curry.
Tabla:
La Luchadora – cacao crumbles, cayenne, touch of American coffee

We will be expanding our offerings list in the beginning of December to include our Raw Vegan Spiced Cacao Balls and some other new items and gift boxes, so check back and stay tuned!

We’ve been out with bikeCOFFEE! at a bunch of events now and a lot of people are surprised to find out that we built the box ourselves. This is true, though we always add the words, with a lot of help.
We wanted to explain this “help” and recognize the talented and generous people who helped us make this truly unique part of the bike.
People from around the world have contacted us as we have made the bike and we have posted a LOT of pictures of our process on Facebook. We even kept a design and construction journal that we may turn into an ebook and sell on Amazon along with Astoria Lever Espresso Machines, for which the bike was designed – though we’d need a motor assist or a flatter city for that. This bikeCOFFEE! is a prototype. We are working on plans to resell plans, bikes and Astoria Machines. We’ll let you know when we get there! Thanks for all the interest.
So here’s some info, credit and thanks about how we made bikeCOFFEE! We owe a huge debt of gratitude to all of these people and many more.
Our dear friend David Solow has been a tremendous source of support, feedback, innovative ideas and more than we can describe. We live in Durham directly and indirectly because of his love of the city and our friendship. He inspires us as friends, in the way he joins concept and material, in his quiet generosity and his open heart. Over the past few months we’ve been David’s photographic subjects and through his eyes have had the opportunity to see ourselves in unexpected yet true ways.

Sean Lilly Wilson at Fullsteam Brewery has been a welcoming force and generous soul. He’s the kind of guy, who despite his own busy schedule, brings together every possible person, organization, idea and fosters it. He is creating community one beer and smile at a time. Thanks for letting us store our bike there for a bit, letting us setup in and outside the brewery and for all the encouragement! And thanks for selling bikeCOFFEE! cold brewed iced coffee in the tavern!

Fullsteam with Farmhand foods out front!
Our friend, David Schmitz, who visited us for 3 weeks this past summer from Weimar, Germany was key in getting our 3D drawings done. Vielen Dank David! Your mom told me to put you to work. Hopefully you had fun too!

David S. handywork!
Adrian Fletcher and Lisa Miller at Seven Stars Cycles, which is housed in the same building as Motorco Music Hall, has been our coach, upfitter, friend and general -veer us away from doom- adviser since the spring. Though it’s not over yet. We have some finishing touches to work out yet! Thanks Adrian and Lisa!

We were running into a dead end when it came to getting the frame welded within our budget and schedule. We kept getting recommendations to talk to people’s friends of friends. Willie, who is part of our family, stepped up and turned a task into a valuable learning experience and extended hanging out bonding session.
The welding of the frame was done in this very special context. Willie drew from his desire to create with precision, teach me some welding skills, and share some beers and a lot of talk together. Willie performed 100′s of precise TIG welds to make a frame that was at once strong, square and lightweight. And I’m really glad we had the chance to spend the time together. This time together and experience will stay with me and is the start of something more significant. Thank you.

Pretty Cool
Through working with David Solow on art projects over the last 10 years, we have gotten to know Al Frega. Al is a unique character in Durham well known for his work as a sculptor and metal smith. What anyone who has ever worked with him knows is that he has a huge heart, a deep love for engaging in the arts, an amazing knowledge of his craft and a loving and generous nature that infects the people around him. And Al thrives off of seeing other people create and the energy that comes out of creating in a common space. Al helped us in ways large and small. Thanks a lot Al!

The frame is made of square aluminum tubing; Andrew Preiss‘s idea. Andrew also helped us get a better price on the aluminum by letting us hop on a bulk order. Andrew chipped in throughout the process from making sure we were on track, to lending tools, consulting on how to achieve our design, drilling holes just right, to making sure our paint job was bad ass. We even got to taste his homemade sourdough bread! Thank you Andrew.

Andrew building a proper lock hole in style!
Most of the materials that make the bike box were donated scraps of old signs, parts from Durham’s dismantled tobacco warehouses and factories, handmade mementos from local artists and friends.
Jackie MacLeod, who has a studio at Cordoba Arts, helped us arrange our decorative elements, lent us tools, contributed parts and let us feature handmade bolts and lights that were given to her by her mentor Jimmy Alexander. Thank you Jackie!

Thanks to Kala Wolfe of the DtownMarket for helping us get out there before we had a physical entity to present and to Jeremy Roth and kids and the Webster family for hosting us and the market at Motorco!

Although Blaine Johnston did not screw in, cut, shape or curve one part on this bike. His influence, belief and creativity is in there somewhere. Thanks Blaine for your kind words and all the past help I never got to thank properly!

Thank you Jenny for holding it down at the market while we were working on all of this!

Friends and family contributed in a myriad of ways and continue to do so as we develop our shop, Cocoa Cinnamon! We really appreciate you.
Special thanks to Victoria Bouloubasis of the Independent Weekly (www.thisfeedsme.com) and Matthew E. Milliken (http://www.bullcityrising.com) of Bull City Rising for news coverage early on in our endeavor!
